Sirasa TV (Sinhala: සිරස TV) was officially launched on 10 June 1998.[2] It was established by MTV Channel (Private) Limited as a Sinhala-language digitalterrestrial network and sister television channel to Sirasa FM, an established private Sinhala radio station launched in 1994.

Ownership and Shareholding

Sirasa TV is owned and operated by The Capital Maharaja Group (formerly Capital Maharaja Organisation Limited), one of Sri Lanka’s largest multi-sector conglomerates, in joint venture with Gregson Holdings Ltd. Following its launch, the international media firm International Media Management also acquired an investment equity stake in MTV Channel (Pvt) Ltd.

The group's broadcasting operations trace back to the establishment of its flagship English service in 1992—initially branded as MTV Channel and later rebranded as MTV Sports before becoming TV 1 (currently operated as TV One). Today, Sirasa TV functions alongside its two primary sister stations:

  • TV 1 – English and bilingual general entertainment network.
  • Shakthi TV – Sri Lanka’s first private Tamil-language terrestrial broadcaster, launched in 1998.[3]

Corporate oversight and executive leadership for the broadcast division are directed by key executives including Group Director Asoka Dias. The media division's central headquarters are located at Braybrook Place, Colombo 02, Sri Lanka.[4]

Transmission and Availability

Sirasa TV broadcasts primarily in Sinhalese and delivers content in 1080p HDTV format. The network is accessible nationwide through free-to-air (FTA) terrestrial UHF relay transmitters, major subscription pay-TV platforms, and digital streaming.

Security Incidents & Political Scrutiny

Throughout its broadcasting history, Sirasa TV and its primary news brand News 1st have experienced sustained political scrutiny, administrative intimidation, and severe physical attacks targeting its broadcast infrastructure and media personnel. Owing to its independent editorial stance and critical coverage of government administration, wartime military operations, and political corruption, the channel has frequently been at the center of national media freedom debates in Sri Lanka.

The 2009 Depanama Studio Bombing

On 6 January 2009 at approximately 2:10 AM, an armed gang of 15 to 20 masked individuals equipped with automatic firearms and explosives forced entry into the newly built studio and transmission complex of MTV/MBC in Depanama, Pannipitiya.

"The 2009 attack on the Depanama studio complex remains one of the most severe physical assaults against a private broadcast facility in Sri Lankan history."[5][6][7]

  • Preceding Threats: The raid followed days of escalating tension, including petrol bombs thrown at the Depanama premises on 2 January 2009, and surveillance by unmarked vehicles. State-controlled media organs had publicly accused Sirasa TV of "unpatriotic" reporting regarding the military's capture of Kilinochchi during the final phase of the Sri Lankan Civil War.[7][8]
  • The Assault: The armed group held security guards and technical personnel at gunpoint, physically assaulted staff members, and methodically destroyed master control systems, edit suites, and broadcasting hardware. Before fleeing, the assailants set fire to the facilities and rigged two Claymore mines—including an active 8 kg explosive device—reducing the primary control room to ashes.
  • Impact and Aftermath: Although transmissions were knocked off the air, Sirasa TV managed to restore signals within hours using emergency backup channels. Just 48 hours later, veteran newspaper editor Lasantha Wickrematunge visited the bombed facility to publicly condemn the attack; he was assassinated in Attidiya shortly afterward. International media watchdogs—including the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), UNESCO, and the International Press Institute (IPI)—called for independent parliamentary inquiries, though no perpetrators were brought to justice.[9][10][11][12][13]

2022 Aragalaya Assaults on News 1st Personnel

During the 2022 Sri Lankan political and economic crisis (Aragalaya), News 1st field reporters and camera crews faced violent physical suppression while conducting live broadcasts of anti-government demonstrations.

  • 9 July 2022 Incident: While broadcasting live prime-time news outside the private residence of then-Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, a team of News 1st journalists—including news anchor Sarasi Peiris, camera operator Varuna Sampath, Judin Sinthujan, and digital correspondent Janitha Mendis—were assaulted by Sri Lanka Police and Police Special Task Force (STF) personnel using batons.
  • Targeting of Backup Crew: When a secondary News 1st team (Kalimuttu Chandran, Imesh Sutherland, Chanuka Weerakoon, and Banidu Lokuruge) arrived to evacuate their injured colleagues, security forces fired tear gas and assaulted them as well.
  • Repercussions: Eight media personnel were hospitalized with severe head and body injuries. The live broadcast of the assault triggered immediate condemnation from the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), the Federation of Media Employees' Trade Union (FMETU), and local human rights groups.[14][15][16][17][18][19]

News & Current Affairs

News and current affairs on Sirasa TV are produced and managed by News 1st, the centralized news division of MTV Channel (Pvt) Ltd and the Capital Maharaja Group[20]. Rebranded as an integrated, multi-platform media operation on October 1, 2003, News 1st supplies news coverage in Sinhala (Sirasa TV), Tamil (Shakthi TV), and English (TV 1), alongside an array of commercial radio channels and trilingual digital portals (newsfirst.lk).

Editorial Style and Coverage

Operating under slogans such as "With The People(ජනතාව සමග in Sinhala)" and "We Report You Decide(සත්‍යයේ සටහන බුද්ධියේ විමසුමට in Sinhala)," News 1st built its broadcast identity around fast-paced breaking news alerts, investigative journalism, and citizen-centric reporting.

Satana

Airing on Tuesday nights, Satana (Sinhala: සටන) is Sirasa TV’s flagship live political debate program. Hosted by senior news directors of News1st, the show brings together government ministers, opposition parliamentarians, and policy analysts in a live studio setting to debate high-stakes national issues. The program incorporates live social media interactions through the #AskSatana hashtag, allowing viewers to submit direct questions to politicians on air.[21]

Dawasa

Airing at 6.30 P.M. on every weekday, Dawasa (Sinhala: දවස) is dedicated current affairs program where political commentators and journalists analyze social media trends, public opinions, and daily legislative proceedings.[22]

Pathikada

Pathikada (Sinhala: පැතිකඩ) is weekday morning interview segment focusing on one-on-one hardtalk-style discussions with political leaders, economists, and civil society representatives hosted by Asoka Dias.[23]

Mawatha (or Aluth Mawatha)

The Gammadda Movement

Originally launched as a public forum segment called Janatha Mandapaya, Gammadda (Sinhala: ගම්මැද්ද, translating to "Heart of the Village") evolved under the direction of late Capital Maharaja Group Chairman R. Rajamahendran into Sri Lanka's largest community-driven rural development initiative.[25]

Door-to-Door Research and Community Projects

To address chronic rural infrastructure neglect, News 1st collaborated with state academic institutions—such as the University of Peradeniya—to conduct the Gammadda Door-to-Door Campaign. Teams of volunteers and researchers travel into remote Sri Lankan villages to document grassroots hardships, including:

  • Lack of safe drinking water and high incidences of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKDu).
  • Broken bridges and hazardous rural transport routes.
  • Dilapidated primary school buildings.
  • Unmitigated human-elephant conflict.

Using collected field data, Gammadda mobilizes private donations, corporate partnerships, and volunteer labor to directly build drinking water filtration plants, rural bridges, and classrooms without relying on state funding.

Gammadda Saviya and V-Force

To ensure project sustainability, Gammadda establishes local Gammadda Saviya Societies in each village, empowering residents to maintain completed projects. The movement also maintains Gammadda V-Force, a nationwide youth volunteer network deployed during natural disasters (such as floods, landslides, and tropical cyclones) to distribute emergency relief supplies and rebuild damaged homes.[26]

Since its inception in 1998, Sirasa TV has maintained a prime-time programming strategy heavily centered on Sinhala-language teledramas, international reality formats, localized foreign serials, and dubbed animated series.
