أُقيم حفل توزيع جوائز إم تي في الموسيقية لعام 1993 مباشرةً في 2 سبتمبر 1993، لتكريم أفضل الفيديوهات الموسيقية من 16 يونيو 1992 إلى 15 يونيو 1993. وقدّم الحفل كريستيان سلاتر في مسرح يونيفرسال أمفيثيتر في لوس أنجلوس. وكان هذا الظهور الأخير لكورت كوبين في حفل جوائز إم تي في الموسيقية.

شهد هذا العام إضافة فئة جديدة أخرى، وهي جائزة أفضل فيديو موسيقي من نوع آر أند بي. لكن هذه هي المرة الأولى التي تُضاف فيها جائزة جديدة إلى قائمة فئات هذا النوع الموسيقي، وهي خطوة جاءت مدفوعة بشكل أساسي بنجاح وشعبية برنامج MTV Jams .

كانت فرقة بيرل جام الفائز الأكبر في تلك الليلة ، حيث حصد فيديو أغنيتها " جيريمي " أربع جوائز، من بينها جائزة فيديو العام. تلتها مباشرةً فرقة إن فوغ بثلاث جوائز، ثم مادونا وبيتر غابرييل بجائزتين لكل منهما. أما باقي الفائزين، فقد حصل كل منهم على جائزة واحدة.

في غضون ذلك، تصدرت فرقة آر أند بي " إن فوغ " وفيديو أغنيتها " فري يور مايند " قائمة الترشيحات في تلك الليلة، حيث حصدت ثمانية ترشيحات. وجاء في المرتبة الثانية كل من بيتر غابرييل ، وإيروسميث ، وآر إي إم ، بستة ترشيحات لكل منهم. ووزع غابرييل ترشيحاته الستة بالتساوي بين فيديو أغنيتيه " ديغينغ إن ذا ديرت " و" ستيم "، بينما نال فيديو أغنية " مان أون ذا مون " جميع ترشيحات آر إي إم. وأخيرًا، فازت فرقة إيروسميث بجائزة اختيار الجمهور، وحصلت على ستة ترشيحات عن فيديو أغنيتها " ليفين أون ذا إيدج ".

MTV announced in late June that the 1993 Video Music Awards would be held on September 2 at the Universal Amphitheatre.^[2] MTV cited complaints from members of the music industry concerning staging, traffic problems, and overcrowding during the 1992 ceremony as reasons for not returning to the Pauley Pavilion.^[2][3] Nominees were announced at a press conference held on July 21.^[4] Christian Slater was announced as host on the same day.^[4] Over 25 television programs contributed to the nominations packages, which were inspired by U2'sZoo TV Tour, including Roseanne, Jeopardy!, and Murder, She Wrote.^[5] The venue was modified to permit scenery and set changes for performers including doubling the width of the proscenium and replacing the back wall with a video projection screen.^[5] Producer Joel Gallen noted that the ceremony would "definitely have more of a sense of humor than past shows."^[5] The ceremony broadcast was preceded by the 1993 MTV Video Music Awards Opening Act. Hosted by Kurt Loder and Tabitha Soren with reports from Cindy Crawford, John Norris, and Alison Stewart, the broadcast featured red carpet interviews, pre-taped interviews with Mariah Carey and Soul Asylum, and pre-taped features on a day with Lenny Kravitz and the Video of the Year nominees.

Nominees were selected by approximately 200 individuals representing record labels, music journalism, music video production, radio, and film studios.^[7] Winners in all categories, except for the Viewer's Choice awards, were selected by over 700 members of the music industry.^[7]
